Dear Colleagues and Friends:

Since the 1st announcement of GeoShanghai International Conference was released, we have received support from Chinese/international academic institutions and industry. Approximately 800 abstracts from 33 countries were received and 382 technical papers including 10 general theme and keynote papers have been accepted for publication in 8 ASCE GSPs (Geotechnical Special Publication) after peer reviews. All 8 GSPs together will have more than 3000 pages. Among all the GSP papers, 179 papers are from China and 203 papers are from other countries including 94 papers from U.S. The conference will be held on June 6-8, 2006 in Shanghai, China. We have developed tentative technical programs, registration form, and pre/post-conference tours, which can be found in the attached GeoShanghai Bulletin #2. To take advantage of a special registration rate at $495, you must make your registration no later than April 6, 2006.

Tours. We recommend you start your post-conference tours after the post-conference field trip to construction sites in Shanghai on June 9. For your convenience, we have also included pre/post-conference tour information provided by the Shanghai Airlines Tours, International. This travel agency will assist us to organize this international conference by arranging the conference site, hotels, transportation, and tours. Our contract with this agency is only limited to conference activities. You are welcome to use its services including hotels, transportation, and tours, however, you are not obligated to do so. The organizing committee will not be responsible for these services even though we will be happy to provide assistance if needed. There are other travel agencies available in U.S., which can provide similar services:

Airline Ticket. June is the hot season for travels to China. The airline tickets will be relatively expensive and low-rate tickets will be sold out quickly, therefore, we encourage you to plan your trip earlier. The ticket price you may get from the above three travel agencies in U.S. now is around $1,000. Please identify yourself as a participant of GeoShanghai. You may get some discount.

Visa. Visa is needed for most people without a Chinese passport to enter China. You may apply for an F (business including conference) or L (tourist) visa. Please let me know if you need an invitation letter from us. Your application can be done through the following online services (your passport and application materials still need to be mailed): www.visamailservice.com, www.uschinavisa.com, or www.visa-chinese.com in U.S. You can also apply for a visa through the above three travel agencies. The total visa fee will be around $70 ($50 application fee and $20 handling fee) plus shipping. It typically takes two weeks for you to get your visa back. Express handling is available but will cost much more.
